Yeah, you took the first step to what seemed a world of more freedom to you. Whether you started your own business from behind your laptop or created a job that allows you to work from home, both come with a new challenge: The choice of total freedom. It can be so inviting to watch Netflix all day long and while you stay in your PJ’s. Guess what? That is not getting any work done. That is why I would like to gift you with these couple of tips to work from home.
Create new habits
When you are first released of the standard 9 to 5 job, you might feel a little lost. Every steadiness you had is now gone. Creating new habits is the way to go for you. I own dogs and horses myself. They provide me with a steady daily program during the day. Now I am not saying you need to get a dog right now (though if you are a dog mum as well, good on you!), but think of the things you can do daily to have something to guide your day. And do them around the same time. Around my steady thing to do, I mostly prefer to work from a flow. After I while I was able to do this because I actually like what I am doing and do not mind doing it.
Get out of bed at the same time
Getting up was never an easy thing for me to do for a long time. So I always stayed in as late as I possibly could (just enough to take the dogs out in time). Now my mornings actually start at six. Yes, sometimes I snooze for like 15 minutes. But I started to notice that I can get so much more done if I start early. Now I do no longer feel like I am wasting my time anymore. See what time works for you and then stick to it. Developing a new habit takes about 30 days when you are doing something every single day. You’ve got this!
Create a morning routine
My morning routine does not end by getting up early. I do yoga every morning. Sometimes only 15 minutes of stretching and other days longer programs that last about an hour. And they all contribute to my life, mind and body immensely. There are also audio’s of Access Consciousness that I listen to every day. They help me get into the right state of mind. Then it is time for a healthy breakfast. Do what feels right for you are this point and learn more about eating healthy. Add other things in your morning routine that you like to do. Maybe it is to go running or take a nice long walk with your dog. I always recommend you to start your day by doing some kind of exercise. This really gets you more in creation mode.
When I work from home, I usually work no more than an hour, an hour and a half tops straight. Why? Because my body likes to keep moving from time to time and not get all stiff sitting in one posture. Some of these breaks last about five minutes, while others last an hour. I do things like going for a five-minute bathroom break, take a little walk around my garden, hanging my laundry out to dry, doing some preparation for dinner. You get the point. The thing is that taking my mind out of creating mode and into exercise, I actually get done a lot more.
Probably one of the most important tips I can give you here. Go outside every single day. I personally have no problems with this area whatsoever, because I love being outside and I have plenty of animals to help me at this front. But I know this is not the case for all of you. Please, challenge yourself to do this. Go for at least a 30-minute walk every day in any type of weather. It not only strengthens your immune system but also is an immense contribution to your creativity.
Use schedulers and branding tools
Not getting soaked up in your social media is a wise thing to do. Therefore I use a lot of schedulers and branding tools to safe time and money. And as an extra bonus, they give your business an overall branding look that makes you look more professional to potential clients. It is all in the details. Allow yourself a certain amount of the day to scroll through the feeds. Honour yourself by clicking them away after that amount of time. Before you know it your entire day has passed without you doing anything.
Every day do something you have been avoiding
It is the things you have been avoiding that keep you stuck in one place. You probably avoid them because you think you have a very good reason to. But is that actually true? Why not start today doing just one thing you have not been willing to do so far. This can be cleaning out your e-mail or set up a new bank account. You name it. See how much lighter you feel after it has been done. You can finally move on.
Create your own working hours
The biggest trap while working from home: You are working at home. This is the place where your family and friends always seem to find you. Where your phone is always buzzing and where the cleaning never seems to be done. Dare to put it all beside you for just a moment. Tell people “no” when they ask to come over during your working hours. Choose you and your business. Your true friends will understand it. And you can actually get some work done during the day.
